Getting started

A simple guide to help you set up and start your plants off beautifully.

Yes - the SmartyPlants app is free to download and use on iOS and Android.

Everything you need to keep your plants thriving comes with your sensor.

Yes - SmartyPlants supports all kinds of indoor plants, from low-light ferns
to sun-loving succulents.

It's designed for houseplants of every shape and style, helping each one
find its perfect balance.

Every SmartyPlants sensor includes a stem attachment. We also offer longer stems for deeper pots, giving you more detail if you'd like an extra layer of insight.

Not always. One sensor can guide care for several plants with similar needs.

If similar plants share the same light or humidity, one sensor gives
insights for all.

For varied collections, adding an extra or two helps keep everything
balanced, which is why we offer bundle options.

SmartyPlants starts learning straight away.

From the moment it's in the soil, the sensor reads moisture, light, temperature, humidity and nutrients. It'll spot anything that needs attention right away.

Over time, it builds a fuller picture of your plant's environment to further tailor insights.

Using your SmartyPlants sensor

Everything you need to know about setup, placement, and how to keep your plants in perfect balance.

SmartyPlants is a discreet smart sensor that helps you understand exactly what your plants need.

By measuring soil moisture, nutrients, light, humidity, and temperature, it takes the guesswork out of care and helping every plant thrive effortlessly.

Getting started is simple:

  1. Charge your sensor.
  2. Download the SmartyPlants app and create your account.
  3. Follow the setup steps to connect to Wi-Fi.
  4. Place the sensor in your plant’s soil.
  5. Attach the sensor to a plant profile within the app.
  6. Get insightful readings on the status of your plant.

You’ll be up and running in minutes. For a step-by-step video guide, watch here.

Place the sensor in your plant’s soil, connect it to the app, and SmartyPlants does the rest.

It monitors your plant’s environment and gently notifies you when attention’s needed — whether that’s a little more light, water, or time to move your plant to a new spot.

SmartyPlants connects via Wi-Fi to sync data with the app.

Once connected, you'll see live updates and gentle care alerts.

It doesn't require Bluetooth or any setup beyond a connection to your home Wi-Fi.

Not yet - but we're working on it.

Future updates will include integrations with popular smart home platforms.

SmartyPlants tracks the five essentials for healthy growth:

  • Soil moisture
  • Nutrient levels
  • Light intensity
  • Temperature
  • Humidity

All working together to keep your plants balanced and thriving.

The sensor is water-resistant and designed for indoor use. It can handle splashes from watering, but shouldn't be submerged or left outdoors.

Most users enjoy around 3 months of use before recharging. The sensor includes a long-life rechargeable battery and charges easily with a standard USB-C cable.

Each light gives you a quick glimpse into how your sensor’s doing:

  • Power on: Hold the button until a green light appears (about 3 seconds).
  • Power off: Hold the button until you see a red light (about 5 seconds).
  • Charging: A solid red light means it’s charging. The light will turn off once fully charged.
  • Automatic data updates: Your sensor flashes green every hour to confirm it’s sending new readings.
  • Manual update: Press the button once to send data instantly — you’ll see a brief green flash.
  • Flashing green: Indicates low power. Recharge to resume normal operation.

If you ever need to start fresh, here’s how to reset your sensor:

Enter reset mode

  1. Press the button twice quickly.
  2. The light will begin blinking white to show it’s in reset mode.
  3. Quickly while the light blinks, hold the button.
  4. When complete, the light will turn green, confirming the reset worked.
  5. Let go of the button as soon as the green light appears.

If the reset fails

  • You’ll see a double red blink.
  • The sensor will return to its previous state, and you can retry again when your ready.

If you see a pop-up saying there’s a Connection Issue, it means the app isn’t receiving a signal from your sensor yet. This can happen during first-time setup, so there’s no need to worry.

One common cause is Wi-Fi frequency:

  • SmartyPlants sensors, like most smart home devices, connect only to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
  • If your Wi-Fi is set to 5GHz, your sensor is trying to connect to a signal it can’t understand.

To get your sensor online:

  1. Switch to a 2.4GHz network: Make sure both your phone and your sensor are connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network during setup.
  2. Use our setup help: Follow our quick connection guide, or Watch the step-by-step video walkthrough

If your sensor isn’t on a 5GHz network, or the connection issue continues after switching to 2.4GHz, please get in touch at Lily@smartyplants.ai and we’ll help you troubleshoot.

The SmartyPlants app

The SmartyPlants app is your simple companion for plant care.

Everything you need to keep your plants thriving comes with your sensor.

Absolutely. Your personal data belongs to you.

We never sell or share personal information, and all data is securely stored.

See our privacy policy for full details.

“Not Planted” doesn’t refer to where the sensor is physically placed. It simply means the sensor hasn’t been linked to a plant in the app yet.

For the sensor to give clear, accurate guidance, it needs to know which plant it’s supporting. Adding your plant to the app is the first step.

You can create a plant by tapping the “+” button in the centre of the bottom navigation bar. Choose the method that suits you, follow the steps, and your plant will appear in your Jungle. Once it’s set up, you can connect a sensor — this gives the sensor its “Planted” status.

How to pair a plant and sensor

You can link them in whichever way feels natural:

  1. During sensor setup — assign the sensor to a plant you’ve already created.
  2. During plant creation — attach an available sensor at the end of the process.
  3. From your Jungle — open any plant, tap Pencil Icon next to the plants nickname, and add a sensor there.
